Downtown Eugene

Where to Start

While the general area may traditionally be considered east of Willamette Street to Alder Street/campus area, we're going to expand our review to include Jefferson Street and its offshoots. The north side of the neighborhood ends at the river and goes south to W 18th Avenue. Many of the streets in this neighborhood are in one direction and the speeds are slow. Bike lanes have been added everywhere as well to help reduce car congestion. You’ll also find the Lane Transit Districts’ central bus depot. With all that said, Eugene’s downtown traffic sees its most congested times in the morning and evening commute times. While the neighborhood has a high number of businesses and restaurants, there are many historical homes and new apartments as well.

Downtown Eugene got its start after Eugene Skinner, the city's namesake, built his home on the hill that is now called Skinner's Butte. He operated a ferry across the Willamette river, opening the area to new businesses and residents. Today, the Downtown Eugene area is home to fun traditions like the Saturday Market and lunch in Kesey Square, and new spots like the 5th Street Public Market and Alley.
